A Local’s Guide to Sunset Beach on Oahu
About the Beach
Few beaches are able to claim the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing as their signature event. Sunset Beach is one of Oahu’s best surf breaks (including the Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay) to host this world-class sporting event! In the winter, the North Shore’s Sunset Beach is a professional surfer’s paradise. Enormous swells up to 30 feet have been recorded here at the height of the season! In addition to upholding Oahu’s reputation as the surfing capital of the world, this beach has a softer side. Stop by for a calm, family-friendly beach day in the summer when the weather is warm and the waves are flat. Sunset Beach is also a stunning spot to watch an Oahu sunset!
How to Get There
Sunset Beach is located just two miles past Ehukai Beach, which is home to the famous Banzai Pipeline. If you’re navigating to Sunset Beach by car, we recommend putting “Sunset Beach State Park” into your GPS. That way, you’ll also get to experience this beautiful park (it’s an especially awesome place for snorkeling in the summer). If you choose to stay in one of our North Shore vacation rentals, you’ll be close to both Sunset Beach and everything else this scenic region of Oahu has to offer!
Tips for Your Visit
Whether you’re staying on the North Shore or traveling from the South Shore (Waikiki), we recommend getting to Sunset Beach early. The best way to make the most of your stay is to grab breakfast at a local North Shore cafe (like Ted’s Bakery), then head over to the beach for a full day of fun in the sun. later in the evening, you’ll be able to catch one of the beach’s famous namesake sunsets. Be sure to also hide any valuables you may be storing in your car or simply leave them back in your safe and secure vacation rental. Sunset Beach is a popular spot, and it can’t hurt to take extra safety precautions.
